That is Dr Essop’s actual answer when an adult asks whether they are too old for braces. It usually gets a laugh, and then it gets a decision.
Teeth in a healthy mouth can be moved at almost any age, about a third of this practice’s patients are adults, and the proportion grows every single year.
Most of them are people who never had the chance at orthodontics as children and are now in a position to do it for themselves. If you sit in our waiting room you will not feel like the only grown-up who wandered into a teenage world. You will feel like what you are: part of the fastest-growing group in orthodontics.
And here is the part nobody warns you about, in a good way. The awkwardness you are dreading lasts a couple of weeks. Colleagues notice, ask once, and move on. Family stops seeing the braces entirely. It becomes simply how you look for a while, and then one day it becomes a much better version of how you look for good.
Many of our adult patients do not come for the photograph. They come because a poor bite has started presenting its bill: teeth wearing unevenly, gums that are hard to clean around crowding, function that is not what it was. Straightening and aligning adult teeth is preventive healthcare with a cosmetic bonus, not the other way around.
Three options, and what each one actually looks like across a meeting room.
The most discreet realistic option. Up close, a colleague may spot them; across a meeting room, nobody will. For the right case they are excellent, and whether yours is the right case is exactly what a specialist assessment establishes.
Clear aligners in full →They look genuinely good, and we offer them, but you deserve the honest footnote: ceramic brackets are more fragile and create more friction, which can stretch treatment out. Dr Essop will tell you when they are worth it and when they are a false economy.
Subtle · can run longerThe option we no longer offer, and the reason is the same honesty. Lingual braces are nearly invisible but they are unkind to oral hygiene and difficult to work with, and clear aligners have made them largely unnecessary. A practice that still sells you one of everything is not editing on your behalf.
Not offered hereAsk adults what shocked them about treatment and the most common answer is not the discomfort. It is how quickly the movement shows. The first months of alignment often deliver visible change, and there is a particular pleasure in watching patients arrive sceptical at appointment one and beam at appointment four.
An adult with a severe Class III bite, an open bite at the front, facial asymmetry and damage to the jaw joints. Treatment changed not just the smile but the face and its function.
Cases like that are why “too late” is rarely the right verdict.
Plenty of adults have put this off because of a bad dental memory rather than the braces themselves. Orthodontics is not that appointment. Our first-visit walkthrough sets out exactly what happens, step by step, before you commit to anything.
Walk through your first visitNo. Provided teeth and gums are healthy, orthodontic treatment works at almost any age. Around a third of our patients are adults, and the number grows yearly.
With clear aligners, mostly not; they are visible only up close. Ceramic braces are noticeable but subtle. We will tell you honestly what each option looks like in real life before you choose.
Often it is the opposite. Many adults treat because a poor bite causes uneven tooth wear, cleaning difficulties and functional problems. Alignment is as much about keeping your teeth for life as about how they look.
Broadly similar to teenagers, commonly 18 to 24 months depending on complexity, and visible improvement usually arrives well before the finish line.
